Luke 18:13-14 — And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Something struck me about this passage this morning. Both of these pray-ers were talking about righteousness. That is, one was talking about it while thinking he had it, and the other was talking about it while wishing he had it. But there is nobody here praying, “Thank you God for not caring how I act, for my ‘freedom’ to do any thing I want.” That is just another way we exalt ourselves. Let us not make the mistake of defining grace as permission to sin. It is a far more magnificent gift than such a low view of it would indicate.
